
On January 25, 2026, at approximately 9:35 p.m., Fayetteville Police Department officers responded to reports of shots fired on the 5200 block of N. Sumac Circle.
According to information obtained by officials, a preliminary investigation indicates that Cheri Smith, 50, her son Erin Poole, 29, and her daughter Amanda Smith, 23, were inside their residence when an altercation occurred between Cheri Smith and an associate, Nijyle Lewis, 25. During the encounter, multiple shots were fired and stabbing took place.
Upon arrival, officers and emergency medical personnel located Cheri Smith and Erin Poole inside the home with gunshot wounds; both were pronounced deceased at the scene. Amanda Smith was also found inside the residence with gunshot wounds and was transported to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
Nijyle Lewis was located at a nearby residence suffering from multiple stab wounds. Investigators report he fled the scene on foot to seek assistance after the altercation. Lewis was transported to a local hospital and is currently listed in stable condition.
Detectives with the Fayetteville Police Department’s Homicide Unit reviewed witness statements, surveillance footage, and 9-1-1 records in coordination with the Cumberland County District Attorney. As a result, Lewis has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder. Authorities state the warrants will be served as he continues to receive medical treatment.
