County Opens White Flag Shelters Feb. 9

Cumberland County and the City of Fayetteville have activated White Flag shelters for Monday, Feb. 9, as temperatures are expected to drop below freezing. According to information obtained by the City of Fayetteville, the Cornerstone Christian Empowerment Center in Spring Lake and The Salvation Army of the Sandhills in Fayetteville will provide overnight accommodations and meals for those in need.

The Cornerstone Christian Empowerment Center, located at 111 N. Bragg Blvd. in Spring Lake, will operate from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m., with intake occurring between 5:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. A shuttle service is available for transportation to and from the Fayetteville Cares Day Resource Center at 128 S. King St. The shuttle departs for the shelter at 5 p.m. and returns at 7:30 a.m. Both dinner and breakfast will be provided.

The Salvation Army of the Sandhills, located at 245 Alexander St. in Fayetteville, will also serve as a shelter location. Intake is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., with dinner served at 5 p.m. This facility is open to both individuals and families. Security screenings are required for all guests, including metal detection, breathalyzer tests, and sex offender registry verification.

Local officials encourage residents to check on neighbors, older adults, and those without reliable heating sources. Additionally, pet owners are advised to bring animals indoors during the freezing conditions.
