Jury Duty Scam Continues to Target Cumberland County Residents

June 26, 20251 min read

Local authorities are issuing a renewed warning as a persistent jury duty scam continues to target residents across Cumberland County. Reports indicate that individuals are still receiving fraudulent calls from scammers posing as deputies from the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, alleging missed jury duty and threatening legal repercussions.

The deceptive scheme involves an initial call informing residents that legal action has been initiated against them for failing to appear for jury service. The scammer then instructs the recipient to return the call immediately. Upon dialing the provided number, victims are met with a voicemail meticulously crafted to mimic the official greetings of the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, further lending a false air of legitimacy to the ploy.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office strongly reiterates that its deputies will never contact individuals by phone or email to demand money, credit card details, or sensitive personal information, including Social Security numbers. Furthermore, legitimate law enforcement agencies will never request payments via electronic money transfers or prepaid gift cards.

"If you receive any communication like this, it is a scam," a representative from the Sheriff's Office emphasized. "Please report it immediately."

Residents with any information regarding these fraudulent activities who wish to remain anonymous are urged to contact Crimestoppers at (910) 483-TIPS (8477). Anonymous tips can also be submitted electronically by visiting http://fay-nccrimestoppers.org and completing the online tip sheet, or by downloading the free "P3 Tips" app, available for both Apple and Android devices.
