Newly obtained dashcam footage by Fay News 10 depicts the terrifying moment Lieutenant Waymon Hudson was struck by a vehicle while responding to a car crash last Friday. The incident, which involved a Ford Mustang hitting another vehicle and a fire truck before colliding with Lt. Hudson, unfolded on US 301 in Cumberland County.

Following the incident, Lt. Hudson was rushed to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Thankfully, his injuries, while significant, were deemed non-life-threatening. He sustained three dislocated ribs and two broken ribs and is expected to make a full recovery within approximately eight weeks.

The incident underscores the inherent dangers faced by emergency responders working on roadways. According to the Emergency Responder Safety Institute (ERSI), a sobering 44 emergency responders lost their lives in roadway incidents while on duty last year alone.

Lt. Hudson believes his near-fatal experience, along with countless others, could be avoided if drivers would simply pay closer attention to their surroundings.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol has identified the driver of the Ford Mustang as Rahasia Flemister, of Fairmont. She is now facing multiple charges, including driving without a license, failing to yield the right of way to an emergency vehicle, and failure to reduce speed.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of driver awareness and adherence to traffic laws, particularly when emergency vehicles are present. Law enforcement officials urge all drivers to slow down, move over when possible, and remain vigilant to ensure the safety of those who are working to protect the public.
