Cumberland County Opens Cooling Centers as Heatwave Grips Region

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – As a sweltering heatwave bears down on Cumberland County, with heat index values predicted to soar to 101 to 103 degrees from Friday, July 25, through Monday, July 28, local authorities are taking proactive measures to ensure resident safety. Cumberland County and the City of Fayetteville have announced the designation of several government buildings as cooling centers, offering a much-needed respite for those without access to air conditioning.

These cooling centers will be open during normal business hours, providing a safe and cool environment for the community to escape the oppressive heat. Residents are strongly encouraged to stay updated on the latest information by monitoring the county's official website and social media channels.

Designated Cooling Center Locations and Hours:

Cumberland County Department of Social Services – Auxiliary Lobby: Located at 1225 Ramsey St., this center will operate Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Masks or face coverings are encouraged for individuals with preexisting conditions.

Cumberland County Department of Public Health – First Floor Lobby: Situated at 1235 Ramsey St., this facility will be open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Masks are required in designated areas and immediately after COVID-19 exposure or infection, and those with health concerns are encouraged to wear a mask.

Cumberland County Public Libraries: All eight library locations across the county will serve as cooling centers. Hours are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday (at select locations) from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Residents can find their local branch at cumberlandcountync.gov/library.

Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation – Recreation Center Lobbies: Various recreation center lobbies throughout the county will also be open. For specific hours and locations, please visit fcpr.us/facilities/recreation-centers.

Fayetteville Area System of Transit (FAST) – Main Lobby: Located at 505 Franklin St., Fayetteville, the main lobby of the FAST building will be open during regular operating hours. Operating hours can be found at fayettevillenc.gov/transit.

Extreme Heat Safety Reminders:

  • Authorities also issued vital safety reminders to help residents navigate the extreme temperatures:

  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

  • Stay in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible.

  • Avoid direct sun exposure during peak heat hours.

  • Limit outdoor activities and take frequent breaks in the shade.

  • Check on elderly neighbors, young children, and pets, as they are particularly vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.

  • Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles, even for a short time, as interior temperatures can rise rapidly to dangerous levels.

  • Cumberland County officials urge all residents to take these precautions seriously and utilize the designated cooling centers to stay safe during this period of hazardous weather.
