The Fayetteville Police Department’s Homicide Unit has arrested a suspect in the death of a man on Bragg Boulevard this past Monday.

Joshua Montez Emerson, 36, has been charged with the murder of Raymond Mathews, 60.

On Monday, September 8, at approximately 12:00 p.m., police responded to a report of a pedestrian struck on Bragg Boulevard near the Martin Luther King Jr Freeway. Officers discovered a man who had been hit by a passing motorist. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

A further investigation revealed that the victim had suffered from apparent stab wounds that led to him entering the busy roadway. The Fayetteville Police Department’s Homicide Unit then assumed the investigation. The victim was identified as Raymond Mathews.

Detectives determined that the victim and the suspect were known to each other. Public records also indicate Emerson was charged in June for soliciting on a highway in the same area where the current incident occurred. Emerson is being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center with no bond.
