FFD Welcomes "Griffith" to Its Ranks as First Crisis Response Dog
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Fayetteville Fire Department (FFD) is bolstering its commitment to the mental well-being of its first responders with the addition of Griffith, a highly trained Crisis Response Dog. Griffith, who officially joins the team on Thursday, July 10, will provide crucial support to firefighters dealing with the inherent stresses of emergency situations.
Griffith, provided by the paws4people Foundation, is specially trained to help mitigate stress and anxiety, whether at the fire station or directly at the scene of an emergency. His presence aims to help emergency responders decompress after difficult calls, ease station tension, lower anxiety levels, reduce the long-term impacts of PTSD, and boost overall heart health among personnel.
The acquisition of Griffith was made possible through the generous funding of BowenStrong, the Fayetteville Professional Fire Fighters Association, and the Fayetteville Firefighters Benevolent Association. This collaborative effort highlights a growing recognition of the need for robust mental health resources for those on the front lines.
Griffith and his dedicated handler have completed 50 hours of specialized training, preparing them for their vital roles within the department. Griffith will be assigned to Fayetteville Fire Station 5 on A-shift, working alongside firefighters during their duty hours and returning home with his handler when off-shift.
The community is invited to witness Griffith's official "vesting ceremony" on Thursday, July 10, at 4 p.m. at Fayetteville Fire Station 5, located at 3040 Boone Trail. During this ceremony, Griffith will be presented with his official Crisis Response Dog vest. Media representatives will also have an opportunity to meet Griffith at the event.
Looking ahead, the Fayetteville Fire Department has plans to integrate two more Crisis Response Dogs into its operations. This initiative aims to ensure that every shift has access to this invaluable emotional support, reinforcing the department's dedication to the holistic well-being of its dedicated firefighters.
