Fayetteville Man Charged with Infant’s Murder After Tragic Death

Homicide Detectives with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office have arrested and charged a Fayetteville man in connection with the death of an infant. Darrell Lamar Evans, Jr., 21, faces charges of Felony Child Abuse and First-Degree Murder.

The investigation began on Thursday, May 8, 2025, when deputies responded to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center at 9:00 p.m. regarding an infant suffering from a traumatic brain injury. Despite medical efforts, the baby tragically succumbed to its injuries the following day, Friday, May 9, 2025.

An autopsy conducted by the North Carolina Chief Medical Examiner's Office concluded the cause of death was homicide. Further investigation revealed that the infant had been in Evans' care on the day of the initial incident, May 8, 2025.

Darrell Evans Jr. was taken into custody on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, and has been processed into the Cumberland County Detention Center. He is currently being held without bond.

Evans is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at 2:30 p.m. at the Cumberland County Detention Center.
