Downtown Fayetteville Road Closures

October 06, 20252 min read

Drivers in downtown Fayetteville should prepare for significant traffic impacts over the next week as the city deals with two separate, major road closures for necessary maintenance and project work.

Market House Roundabout Closed for Scaffolding Removal

The historic Market House roundabout will be the first area impacted, closing temporarily for the safe removal of scaffolding, which marks the final stages of the first phase of improvements to the structure.

When: Daily from October 6 to October 10, between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.

What: The closures will affect all approaches to the roundabout, including:

  • Hay Street, from Donaldson Street and Anderson Street.

  • Green Street, from Maiden Lane.

  • Person Street, from Otis Jones Parkway and Bow Street.

  • Gillespie Street, from Otis Jones Parkway and Franklin Street.

Detour routes will be clearly marked, and drivers are encouraged to follow the posted signs.

Note: While vehicle traffic will be impacted, pedestrian access to surrounding businesses and public spaces will remain open.

Future Impact: The Market House clock replacement is also scheduled for October 20, which will require the same road closures from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on that day.

West Russell Street Closed for Railroad Work

Separately, a vital downtown corridor will close mid-week for railroad maintenance. A railroad company informed state highway officials that they need to close West Russell Street to perform essential railroad crossing maintenance.

When: Wednesday, October 8, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Where: The four-lane road will be closed in both directions near Ray Avenue.

Who: Contractors for R.J. Corman Railroad Group will be conducting the track repairs and installing detour signs.

Drivers should seek an alternate way around downtown on Wednesday or follow the detour signs to be posted. For ongoing updates on the Market House project and traffic impacts, visit the official website at www.FayettevilleNC.gov or follow the City’s social media channels.
