A fatal vehicle collision on Morganton Road has claimed the life of a Fayetteville woman.

On September 14, 2025, at approximately 11:09 am, officers were sent to a vehicle crash in the area of Morganton Road near Heartstone Drive. The Fayetteville Police Department’s Traffic Unit responded to the scene to conduct the investigation.

A preliminary investigation found that a 2022 Dodge Ram pickup truck, driven by 41-year-old Richard B. Goodyear, was traveling westbound on Morganton Road at a high rate of speed. A 2019 Volkswagen SUV, operated by 64-year-old Luz E. Arroyo, was also traveling westbound when the Dodge Ram collided with the rear of her vehicle. The impact pushed the Volkswagen SUV into a utility pole, resulting in Arroyo's death.

Arroyo, a Fayetteville resident, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Her next of kin has been notified.

Goodyear, also from Fayetteville, was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and is in stable condition. He has been charged with Misdemeanor Death by Motor Vehicle, Careless and Reckless Driving, Driving on the Wrong Side of the Road, and Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid Colliding with a Vehicle.

This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer C. Lewis at (910) 818-1872. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Fayetteville/Cumberland County Crimestoppers:
