Fayetteville Woman Arrested After Breaking into Home of Murdered Green Beret
A recent arrest in a Fayetteville breaking and entering case has taken an unexpected turn, connecting it to a high-profile homicide investigation that captivated the community earlier this year. Bobbi Cox, a woman now facing charges, stands accused of breaking into a home that was the scene of a tragic death just months ago.
On Saturday, September 7, 2025, authorities apprehended Bobbi Cox in connection with a break-in at the residence shared by Clint Bonnell and his wife, Shana Cloud, on Butler Nursery Road in Fayetteville. According to official records, Cox is charged with felony breaking and entering with the intent to commit a felony or larceny and injury to real property for allegedly damaging a kitchen window during the incident. The property is now currently owned by Clint Bonnell’s sister, Stefanie Firkins.
The home Cox is accused of entering is the same residence where a well-being check on January 28, 2025, sparked a homicide investigation. Bonnell, a student at Methodist University, was reported missing when he failed to show up for class. His vehicle and personal items were found at the home, but he was nowhere to be found.
The case was initially assigned to the Cumberland County Sheriff Office Major Crimes Investigative Unit but was later reassigned to the Homicide Unit, leading to an extensive investigation that included search warrants at the Fayetteville residence and in Virginia. The search extended to Cloud's vehicle, a rental property, and her cell phone. The investigation culminated in the discovery of human remains on February 25, 2025, in a body of water on Gainey Road, less than three miles from the residence.
Due to the state of the remains, DNA samples were sent to the North Carolina State Crime Lab and then to the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System. On March 28, 2025, the remains were positively identified as Clinton Bonnell.
Following the confirmation, arrest warrants were issued for Shana Cloud. She was taken into custody without resistance and is currently being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center without bond, facing charges related to her husband's death. The property, the very same house Bobbi Cox is now accused of breaking into, remains a key location in the ongoing investigation into Bonnell's death.
Cox is scheduled for her first appearance in court later this afternoon at the Cumberland County Detention Center.
