American Legion Legacy Run Rolls into Fayetteville
Fayetteville, N.C. – The roar of hundreds of motorcycles is set to descend upon Fayetteville this Sunday as the American Legion Legacy Run makes its way through the city, carrying with it a powerful mission rooted in nearly a century of service.
The 19th annual ride, which began in 2006, has raised more than $16 million for the American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund. These funds have provided over $6.2 million in scholarships to support the higher education of children who lost a parent in active military service on or after September 11, 2001, or whose post-9/11 parent has a VA disability rating of 50% or higher.
Thanks to the enduring success of the scholarship fund—now self-sustaining for the foreseeable future—the Legacy Run expanded its mission in 2024 to begin fundraising for The American Legion Veterans & Children Foundation (VCF), which provides additional support to veterans and military families facing urgent, unexpected hardships.
The ride’s mission is a direct reflection of The American Legion’s core values, which date back to its founding in Paris in 1919. A patriotic veterans organization chartered by Congress, The American Legion has been a driving force in shaping veteran policy and community support. Key achievements include its role in the creation of the Veterans Administration and its instrumental work on the original GI Bill. Through programs like the Legacy Run, the Legion continues its dedication to the principle of "service to God and country," ensuring that the sacrifices of military families are never forgotten.
On Sunday, August 17, more than 300 American Legion Riders and 200 support vehicles are expected to pass through town on their journey, which began in South Boston, Virginia, and will travel through North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia before concluding near Tampa, Florida. The group will arrive at the Segra Stadium in downtown Fayetteville around 2 p.m., where they will be attending a Fayetteville Woodpeckers baseball game.
On Monday, August 18, the riders will depart from the Crown Coliseum, continuing a journey that represents not just a motorcycle trip, but a promise to support those who have served.
