Sex Offender Arrested at Cumberland County Courthouse

A registered sex offender has been arrested and charged with Indecent Exposure following an incident at the Cumberland County Courthouse.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Sex Offender Registration Unit (SORU) responded to a report on January 21, 2026, regarding an individual exposing himself inside the Judge E. Maurice Braswell Cumberland County Courthouse. Detectives identified the suspect as 27-year-old Jason Tyquan Hammonds.

Hammonds is listed as a Registered Sex Offender on the North Carolina Sex Offender and Public Protection Registry. Following the investigation by SORU detectives, he was apprehended and charged with Indecent Exposure. Authorities confirmed that Hammonds was booked into the Cumberland County Detention Center. During his first court appearance, a judge set his secured bond at $75,000.

In light of the arrest, the Cumberland County Sheriff Johnathan Morgan addressed the incident, stating, "Community safety is a shared responsibility. Staying informed and looking out for each other helps keep everyone safe. We urge residents to use available resources and report anything unusual to law enforcement."
