Cumberland County will soon see a change in its top law enforcement position, as Sheriff Ennis W. Wright publicly announced his retirement, effective midnight on June 30, 2025. The announcement follows discussions with the County Commissioners, to whom Sheriff Wright also submitted a formal letter of resignation.

In his letter to the commissioners, Sheriff Wright expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to serve, particularly noting his honor in succeeding his mentor, Sheriff Earl "Moose" Butler. He also extended his thanks to the citizens of Cumberland County for their trust and support in electing him to office.

Looking ahead, Sheriff Wright's letter acknowledged the statutory responsibility of Chief Deputy C. Jack Broadus to step in as acting sheriff until the commissioners appoint a permanent successor. In a significant recommendation, Sheriff Wright requested that the commissioners consider Major Jonathan T. Morgan for the role of his successor.

Beyond his official communication to the commissioners, Sheriff Wright also issued a heartfelt thank you directly to the community. He specifically applauded the deputies, detention officers, and civilian employees of the Sheriff's Office. He commended their unwavering service, integrity, dedication, and support throughout his tenure, recognizing their commitment to the fair and just enforcement of the law and the fulfillment of their duties.

Sheriff Wright's departure marks the end of an era for the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, and the community now awaits the commissioners' decision on who will lead the department into its next chapter.
