Thousands Connect with Resources at PSRC Back to School Event
LUMBERTON, N.C. – Over 7,000 people attended the Public Schools of Robeson County (PSRC) 2025-2026 Back to School Celebration on Saturday, August 2, at the Southeastern Agricultural Center. The event served as a major kickoff for the new academic year, bringing together students, families, school staff, and community partners.
The celebration provided a valuable array of resources, including free backpacks and school supplies for attendees. Robeson Health Care Corporation’s Mobile Unit was also on site, offering affordable school and sports physicals, a service appreciated by parents for its convenience.
A new addition this year was the "Stronger Together Back to School Connection Fair," a collaborative effort with local partners like the Robeson County Health Department and the Robeson County Partnership for Children. The fair connected families with essential community resources, while various vendors, including food trucks, added to the festive atmosphere.
"It's a great opportunity, especially for low-income families," said Lynn Sealey, an attendee. Another parent, Shan Sealey, highlighted the importance of the on-site physicals, stating, "Some parents can’t get off work to take them for physicals, so this is really beneficial."
Throughout the day, families received science kits and important information about the new school year. They also learned about the upcoming Robeson County Career and Technical Education Center and the Robeson Planetarium and Science Center, both scheduled to open in December 2026.
Family Engagement Specialist Brendalyn Thompson expressed her gratitude, encouraging families to stay involved in their student's education. Assistant Superintendent Jennifer Freeman reinforced this message, citing research that links parental involvement to higher grades and better attendance.
PSRC Superintendent Dr. Freddie Williamson reminded everyone that the new school year is a "fresh start for all of us."
Families who were unable to attend the celebration can still receive backpacks and school supplies at open house events on August 21 from 1-6 p.m. (excluding PSRC Early College). PSRC Early College students returned to class on August 12, with all other students beginning the new school year on August 25.
