An officer-involved shooting resulting in a fatality occurred Sunday, July 20th, 2025, in Fayetteville. The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office was involved in the incident, and the State Bureau of Investigation has initiated an independent inquiry.

On Sunday, July 20th, 2025, at approximately 9:58 pm, Cumberland County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the 4000 block of Airline Drive in Fayetteville, NC. The purpose of their dispatch was to assist the Pearce’s Mill Fire Department, which was managing a brush fire. The fire department had requested law enforcement presence due to the reported presence of a male individual with a firearm at the scene.

During a subsequent search of the area, deputies encountered a male individual in possession of a firearm in the 4000 block of Catherine Drive, Fayetteville, NC. Deputies issued verbal commands instructing the individual to drop the firearm. The individual then pointed the firearm in the direction of the deputies. In response to this action, a deputy discharged their weapon, employing deadly force. Following the discharge, deputies on the scene immediately rendered first aid to the individual. Medical personnel subsequently arrived, and the individual was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Consistent with established protocol for critical incidents involving deputies, the State Bureau of Investigation has been contacted. This agency will assume responsibility for the investigation into the specific circumstances surrounding the shooting. The deputies involved in the incident will be placed on administrative leave pending an internal review.
