Cumberland County and City of Fayetteville to open White Flag shelters and warming centers

February 05, 20261 min read

Cumberland County and the City of Fayetteville have activated the White Flag shelters and have designated several community locations as warming centers from Feb. 5 through Feb. 8. These measures are being taken in response to forecasted below-freezing temperatures to provide safe environments for residents in need of heat and food.

Cumberland County, in partnership with the City of Fayetteville and various community organizations, will open White Flag shelters and warming centers starting Feb. 5. The activation is scheduled to remain in effect through Feb. 8 due to expected freezing weather conditions.

Two primary locations will serve as White Flag shelters. The Cornerstone Christian Empowerment Center, located at 111 N. Bragg Blvd. in Spring Lake, will operate from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. The Salvation Army of the Sandhills at 245 Alexander St. will also provide shelter with intake occurring between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Both locations will provide meals to guests. Shuttle services will also be available from the Fayetteville Cares Day Resource Center at 5 p.m., with a return trip at 7:30 a.m.

Additionally, several warming centers will be available during daytime hours. These include all Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks and Recreation Centers, the FAST Transit Lobby, and the lobbies of the Cumberland County Department of Social Services and the Department of Public Health on Ramsey Street. All eight Cumberland County Public Library branches, the Fayetteville Cares Day Resource Center, and The Salvation Army will also be open to the public seeking relief from the cold.

Officials encourage residents to check on neighbors and older adults, and remind pet owners to bring animals indoors during this period of freezing temperatures.
